When we first moved to West Virginia, we brought 6 dogs with us: Katie,
Mosby, Kellsea, Rook, Maggie, and Teddy. Kellsea and Rook are both Border Collies; Kellsea is the only dog
we purchased with papers. Rook came from a Border Collie rescue organization. Katie is an Australian Shepard mix and
is about 16 years old; we adopted her from a shelter along with her brother, Sebastian, who died of natural causes the summer
of 2006 just before we moved. We bought Mosby, a Pyrenees mix, for $25 at a yard sale--a wonderful dog, he died of old
age a few months ago. Maggie and Teddy (sister and brother Lab mixes) also came from a shelter. Unfortunately,
Maggie came down with Parvo almost immediately. We were able to save her and prevent any of the others from catching
the illness. We call her our million dollar baby.
After we moved to WV, I decided I wanted to breed Great Pyrenees so we
purchased a male puppy from a wonderful breeder in Indiana, Shari Wallace and her family at the Hitching Post Farm. We named him Madison for the Madison River in Montana. He was
such a wonderful addition to our family that we decided we wanted 2 females so we got on the waiting list for spring babies.
In the meantime, I decided that with all the unwanted puppies in the world I really wasn't comfortable deliberately breeding
to produce more. We did purchase 2 females, Anna and Ella (named for some of our ancestors) but we neutered Madison
and spayed the girls when they were old enough. So now we are up to 8 dogs of our own. We have 3 rescues that
will probably stay with us forever: Suzie who was abused, Bessie who just made herself a part of the family, and Sugar
who bonded so closely with me I just couldn't give her away.
